BigMan in February

posted Feb 14, 2016, 3:44 PM by Lee Deskins

Everyone was happy after Tennis

No surprise that on 2/12/2016 Garry Chalmers was once again BigMan. The reall surprise was that we played on the Clay at the Inn. It was chilly (in the 30's) and there was some snow during and after. Our youngster really struggled in the cold. Luckily he played with Garry first after the first set racquets were seen flying.

We had to play a 4th set since it was so nice to be on the clay in February and Mike Martin and Lee Deskins (the much older players) took Garry and Adam Deskins to a tie breaker. Of course Garry and Adam pulled it out but we at least gave them a game.

There was some talk about posting the first bagel set for the year but while there was an opportunity, it didn't happen.

New "NoMan" Greg W. relieved!

This post provided by the new reigning "NoMan" - Mike Martin

There’s a new “No-Man” for Williamsburg Friday Tennis (Greg you can now walk without shame).  Garry Chalmers, Mike Martin, Lee Deskins and Adam Deskins playing on the Inn hard courts in somewhat challenging winter conditions (25mph winds, a 30 degree wind chill, balls that bounced about 1/3 regulation, snow on the sidelines and a work weary, distracted, reigning Big Man, Garry Chalmers), it was just a matter of time before someone succumbed to play with 3 "off their game" partners.  That someone was Mike Martin who’s stellar play could not overcome the temperamental, condition affected, lackluster strokes from Chalmers, Deskins and Deskins.  In a consolation fourth set (add darkness after sunset to the above conditions for this match), Chalmers and Martin were able to miss fewer balls and go on to a tight win over Deskins and Deskins.   But no matter what the extenuating circumstances, Martin carries the No Man burden into Feb.  By either not playing or getting Chalmers to show up with his A game, Mike hopes to pass the torch soon.

I probably would have said Greg can play with less shame.

What Mike doesn't yet understand is that as long as we play there will be a reigning NoMan and BigMan. What Mike needs is a new and different "NoMan" if Garry shows up and plays like he normally does it may be a while before there is a new "NoMan". Of course we thought the same when Greg was NoMan, tennis is such a fragile sport.

Snow! Friday Doubles Cancelled

It looks like the Clay will be out of service for a few days. This means Greg Wall will continue to be the reigning No-Man and Garry will continue to be the reigning Big-Man. Stay safe, if the roads clear up Mike has a beer for you!

First Big-Man 2016

January 15, 2016 - The Friday Doubles group played and this week we have our first Big-Man for 2016. The combatants were Garry Chalmers, Mike Martin, Adam Deskins and Lee Deskins. Garry Chalmers (no surprise) has clinched the first Big-Man for the year.

Both of the Friday matches which have been played this year have been played outside on the Clay.

2016 First No-Man

Friday Afternoon Doubles at Colonial Williamsburg Inn Tennis

January 8, 2016 - We have the first No-Man for the year. The first Friday afternoon doubles match at the Inn for 2016 resulted in a No-Man. The load was too heavy to carry for perennial Big-Man Garry Chalmers. The match consisted of Garry Chalmers, Mike Martin, Greg Wall and Lee Deskins (the author).

For those unfamiliar with the format we each play a set of doubles with the other 3 players. The last set always features a team that has each won one set and a team with a player who has not lost (2 wins) and a player who has not won. If the player who has not lost wins, he is what we call Big-Man since he has won a set with each of the other players. If however the player who has not won a set loses then he is No-Man.

So who is our first No-Man? Greg Wall takes the prize. In fairness Greg doesn't usually play with our Friday doubles group but he understood the first No-Man of 2016 was a possibility before playing.
